Black Box

This series is a continuation of my fascination with the various ways of looking at chalkboards. They can convey messages both written and pictoral, carry that message through time and, once erased and written over retain some vestige of those past messages like strata in a canyon wall.

The instigation of this series came from the book How Children Learn by John Holt. The books subject is Holts theories on learning and memory systems in children. Reading it, I began to question my own memory and its workings.

These pieces act as both illustrators of the various systems our minds use to categorize and retain information, and as personal self-help exercises.

All works are chalk on slate-painted wood panel.
